Summer Concert Freebies discovers a hidden gem

By John Haley

Summer Concert Freebies, in our sixth summer of operation, has been to countless venues across the state, but we haven’t even scratched the surface with hundreds of venues spread out in every nook and cranny of the Garden State.

So when we come across a hidden gem, we need to tell people about it.

So, without further ado, go to Waterfront Park in Carteret when you have the chance.

We had a chance to check out the Gentlemen of Soul recently, a stellar seven-piece outfit with three vacalists covering soul music from back in the day with an endless energy.

When we approached the venue, with no expectations in mind, we discovered a wonderland for live music.

Located on the bay, there is a brand new, extended dock area where you can stroll along and enjoy the sties. When you re-enter the music area, there is a gazebo where the bands play and that is surrounded by a large area of artificial grass with plenty of room to set up your lawn chair.

If you didn’t bring a chair, no worries, there are so many tables set up as well couches all over the perimeter of the park.

When the sun goes down, the venue comes to life with colorful lights all around which Illuminates the entire area.

There is a full cash bar, but patrons can bring in their own snacks.

There is a DJ on board Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 2 p.m. with a free music series making place on Sundays from 7 to 9.

There will also be a free latin festival taking place on Saturday, July 31 from 4 to 10 p.m.

The parking is tough, so it may be a good idea to get there early to secure a spot.

If you just want to relax or be a part of a full-fledged party, Carteret Park is the place to be.
